This is the first GRADIUS II game I played. We (with my brothers) used our "red pocket money" to buy it in the spring of 1989. One word to describe it, excellent! We had saw the game images from a local game magazine before. After we played the game, it is just much more interesting than we expected. (^^)
Besides the very touching background music and the cool sound effect, this version includes stages that didn't appeared in the Arcade. Such as the "Skeleton Head" boss (after the "Big Eye" boss) at the end of the 2nd stage, and the extra "Cell" stage after the Hostile Ship (normally the last stage).
The FC version also showed very special in other ways including the 5 level of Option, which the last level is time limited rotation. The original 3rd (Crystal World) and the 4th stage (A Way Out Of Difficulty) are inverted in appearance order. The Maximum Speed stage in FC is composed with and at the beginning of the Hostile Ship. It's also quite special that there's no boss in the 3rd stage (A Way Out Of Difficulty) in the FC version.
One disadvantage of this version of GRADIUS II may be the difficulty. I remember I can finish the game without any crash in the next day I first played. Though the duration of the game is a little bit short, I still love it very much. I also remember I did sucessfully found out a save position in the boss of the Crystal World stage. In which I successed to avoid all the lasers released from boss without any move of Vic Viper. It seems like the lasers pass through the plane, but actually they're just very close but didn't hit me. (^^!) I keep Vic Viper stay freeze (put down the joyspad) and then watched it for very very long time, but it seems the boss will not self-destroyed and will keep attacking forever... . This is also my most proud of this game.
I replayed it in recent years and aim for the ultimate score of the game. I finally achieved this purpose in the 12th loop 8th stage. In which I find that the ultimate score 9999990. I also discovered that the maximum life is 99. More bonus will not increase this number anymore. And when crashed one, the no. of rest will become 98. Moreover, it seems the difficulty is only increased once, from the 2nd loop. So actually it is quite easy to play on in the 3rd and higher loop. It is just the matter of time to achieve the ultimate limlit score - 9999990.
