There is an European version of this game, which is named NEMESIS 3.
Note
This version is the one with most RPG elements. The control of the game is very non-sensative.There is about 0.2 second in the delay of direction control. And this increased the game difficulty a lot. This version has a unique characteristic among the other Gradius titles. There will be looping stages (4th & 7th) in the game. Unless you can find and get the "map" inside the stage, you'll be get looped again and again in the same stage. This is also my experience in the first time I played this game. I get looped in the 5th (Moai) stage and I had no idea what's going on... . (T-T)
