Press START button to pause the game and then enter :

Finish the game once (under any game level) or Play Time over 10 hours.

Extra Mode including the Extra Edit will be selectable from the menu. From Extra Edit, you can have weapon combination from all the weapon items.

Finish the game once (under any game level) with Extra Edit or Play Time over 20 hours.

Hit the "bullet ball" released from the final enemy Bacterian (Gofer like). You will then entered into the hidden stage (either GRADIUS or SALAMANDER). After that, Extra Mode will appear. You can then select and play those hidden stages directly.

After visited to the 9th stage, Extra Mode including the Cube Attack will be available to select. From which, you can set your speed and practice the Cube Rush section.

Boss Rush Mode (translated from KONAMI Homepage)

Finish the game by 1 credit or Play Time over 10 hours. (?)

In the Boss Rush Mode, you'll have to fight against a total of 12 bosses which appeared from stage 1 to 8. This can also be described as a Time Attack Mode because the play time is recorded, and the fastest time will be keep record. You'll be equipped with have full weapon (except BARRIER) in each life. You can increase you speed (maximum 5 levels) by pressing the powerup button.

While the development of this title, the fastest record made by KONAMI's staff is 05:43:00 (5 minutes 43 seconds) with P.M.S. Type 01 under the EASIEST game level.

Finish the game by 1 credit or Play Time over 20 hours. (?)

By using the Stage Select, you can select any stage that you have reached including those beyond the 1st loop. This mode is very helpful in practicing the difficult stages.

HIT DISP Display

Finish the game in Hi-Score Try mode.

Press START button to pause the game, the words "HIT DISP OFF" will appear in the centre of the screen. Press LEFT or RIGHT to switch between ON / OFF.

By turning the HIT DISP ON, every objects in the screen will show up their exact hit (contact) area. You'll see many squares /and rectangles colored in blue, yellow and red appear inside every hitable objects. Red is for enemy objects, blue is for Vic Viper and powers, and yellow is for Vic Viper's weapons. From which you can see the exact hit area of Vic Viper is actually just a small rectangle from inside (some part of the cockpit and tail will not get hit). You'll also see some positions of enemies are actaully non-hitable (Vic Viper can pass through) even they looks like dangerous. One example is the Bubble Core (3rd stage boss), where the upper and lower part (release bubbles) of it are actually not "solid".
